Meet Kara - Owner and creator of 180 Cakes | Sugar free keto cake mix | Perth WA

Hi, I'm Kara, the creator of 180 Cakes. My love of baking began in 2005 when I started my Chef Apprenticeship.

In 2017 I decided to create baked goods that wouldn’t have negative impacts on people’s health, that would be safe for people with diabetes and coeliacs disease and most importantly would taste delicious. It took me 7 months of experimentation just to create my first diabetic friendly cake mix because I refused to compromise on taste and quality.

 
I launched my range of baking mixes in Feb 2018, after working closely with the diabetes community. Using only clean ingredients to produce our high quality packet mixes that are gluten and sugar free, are low carb and are not highly processed. I wanted to perfect the mixes to guarantee they not only tasted ‘as good as the real thing’ but that they did not spike people’s blood sugar levels.
 

180 Cakes is 100% Australian Owned and Made and source Australian ingredients first (such as almond meal) however some ingredients are not produced in Australia (such as xylitol).  I continue to research my ingredients and improve my sugar free recipes as and when new information comes to light.

The name 180 Cakes

The name 180 Cakes comes from an exchange between Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Doug Tompkins, founder of North Face during the movie “180° South”.

 

“In response to people who say you can’t go back. Well, what happens when you get to the cliff?  Do you take one step forward or do you make a 180 degree turn and take . . . one step forward? Which way are you going? Which is progress?” (Tompkins)

 

“The solution might be to turn around and take a forward step.” (Chouinard)

And I agree, when it comes to improving our health and the ingredients we traditionally use in baking, we should make a 180 degree turn and take . . . one step forward.
